Study in Germany for Masters and Bachelors

🇩🇪 Study in Germany

Germany is one of the most popular destinations for Indian students because of its high-quality education, strong public universities, relatively low tuition costs, and excellent career opportunities.

🎓 Why study in Germany?

  • Many public universities charge no tuition fee or relatively low tuition, although students normally pay a semester contribution.
  • A wide range of Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programmes are available.
  • Many Master's programmes are taught in English, while German-taught programmes require appropriate German-language proficiency.
  • Strong opportunities in engineering, IT, computer science, data science, business, management, health sciences, environmental sciences and other fields.
  • International students can work subject to the applicable German student-work rules.
  • Germany offers opportunities to remain after graduation to look for qualified employment.

DAAD notes that admission depends on whether your previous qualification is recognized as a German higher-education entrance qualification and on the requirements of the specific programme.

💶 Tuition fees and living expenses

For many public universities, tuition fees are not charged, but students must pay a semester contribution, which varies by university.

However, there are exceptions. For example, some universities/programmes charge tuition fees to non-EU students, so the specific university and state must always be checked.

For the German student visa, the current proof-of-financing requirement is €992 per month / €11,904 for one year. This can generally be demonstrated through a blocked account, recognized scholarship or other permitted means.

📋 Basic admission requirements

For Bachelor's:

  • 12th-standard qualification
  • Recognition of the academic qualification for German university admission
  • Required subject background
  • Language proficiency
  • University-specific academic requirements

For Master's:

  • Recognized Bachelor's degree
  • Relevant academic background
  • Required GPA/percentage depending on the programme
  • English or German language qualification
  • Programme-specific prerequisites

Some Indian applicants may also need to complete APS (Academic Evaluation Centre) procedures before applying for a German student visa.

🛂 Student visa

For an Indian student staying in Germany for more than 90 days, a German National Visa (D visa) is normally required. Germany's Federal Foreign Office currently provides student-visa applications through its Consular Services Portal for applicable categories.
